Fascinating history
The university’s history began in 1986 when seven independent colleges merged into one institute. Although those educational institutions were located in separate districts of London, they all had one thing in common, art. The institute received its own coat of arms in 1998. In 2001, Michael Bichard was appointed to the post of rector and suggested applying for university status. The institution was solemnly renamed the University of Arts London in 2004. Nowadays, the university unites six different colleges. The oldest of them is Central Saint Martins. The college was founded in 1854. But at first, it was just an ordinary art school, which in 1989, merged with another similar educational institution and formed a college.
The university was constantly improved, new managers were appointed and structural changes took place. Every year, talented, inspired and ambitious people enter it. The institution can boast more than 200,000 graduates and some of them became world-famous professionals. Among the most outstanding graduates of the university are Samantha Cameron, actor Tim Roth, Alan Rickman (known for one of the leading roles in the Harry Potter film series), artist Richard Long, actress Penelope Wilton, model Erin O’Connor, shoe designer Patrick Cox and many others.
